Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

Why perform Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)?

  • SLT is used to lower your eye pressure

  • It may lower the eye pressure by about 20-30%

  • Effective in about 80% of patients

  • The laser effect wears off after several years, but the laser can be repeated

  • SLT is not a cure for glaucoma and regular follow-ups are required

SLT risks may include:

  • Redness

  • Irritation

  • Light sensitivity

  • Temporary blurry vision

  • Floaters

  • Corneal swelling

  • Uveitis/Iritis

  • Dry eye

  • Increased eye pressure

  • Change in refractive error

  • In rare cases SLT may be associated with permanent significant vision loss

Preparation instructions:

  • Use all of your medications and eye drops as prescribed

  • Consume your food and drink as usual

  • You must bring a driver

  • An anesthetic drop will be put in your eye(s) to numb the area

  • While it is normal to feel nervous, the procedure only takes minutes to perform and is generally very well tolerated

Post-treatment instructions:

  • Vision may be blurred, do not operate a vehicle or heavy machinery until the next day

  • A prescription for a drop will be provided to you for the following days

  • You will be provided a follow-up appointment in 6-8 weeks

  • If you experience any significant pain and/or blurred vision please contact our office
